One of the advantages to using subdivision, apart from being extremely versatile is you can achieve a desired shape a lot of the time with much less geometry, making it over all much easier to work with. Having polygons for the sake of polygons and having an ultra dense mesh because you’ve bevelled everything isn’t efficient by any stretch of the imagination. It’s true modern hardware can handle high poly counts with ease, it still needs to make sense for it to have that density in the first place. Avoiding doing something because it’s difficult is doing yourself a disservice in my opinion. While you can model a lot of objects without the use of subdivision, achvis, products for manufacturing, low poly style etc it really depends what you’re looking to achieve.

With it comes an excellent understanding of topology, edge flow, efficiency of polygons and so on, it’s something that takes a long time to become efficient at and even more so to master. It sounds like from your post you gave up 3d because you found subdivision modelling too difficult? Sub d modelling is difficult, especially to do at a high level.

Take a look at any job advertising for a hard surface modeller and apart from Maya and/or 3ds max subdivision surface modelling and excellent knowledge of topology will be requirements, amongst others. Especially If you’re looking to get work in the visual effects industry as a modeller ,then excellent knowledge of subdivision modelling and topology is a must.
